Nadine recently gave me a bunch of her mother and father's button down shirts, and a suit her mom used to wear. The suit was comprised of a navy skirt, a mustard yellow silk blouse, and a cream, yellow and navy checked jacket. What to do? Well, I started with the shirts:
Here they are in a pile on the bed, ready to be cut up.
And there they are neatly cut into squares with the sleeves from the shirts piled underneath. |
Here's the quilt laid out on the bed, ready to be sewn together.
And here it is, sewn together. This is just the face, without the backing yet.
And here it is again.
In the meantime I had to figure out what to do with the suit. Nadine decided on three 12 inch pillows, so i got to work on the design. I tried to incorporate as much of the detail as possible, hence the buttons, etc.
And here they are finished.
Back to the quilt.
I chose a pale blue color for the back because with shirts like these,
many people would wear them with either jeans or khakis
and I thought the light blue was a nice compromise
without making it too heavy.
And here is the final product. It ended up being 9 feet by six feet.
All quilts by kate are one-of-a-kind originals. A quilt like this would be priced at $400.
Finished August 2012.
